Dilantin (Phenytoin) drug is used for controlling seizures.
Dilantin is an anti-epileptic drug and also an anticonvulsant. The drug works on the brain cells that cause seizures and slows down the impulses that lead to the conditions.
Dilantin should only be swallowed. Crushing, breaking and chewing the drug may release more of the medicine into the body. Once you have been administered the drug, you should follow the prescriptions very strictly. Do not deviate from the doses and also take the right amount of the dose at the specified time. However, if a dose is missed, you can take it before the next dosage. But never go for a missed dose if your scheduled dosage time is ear. Mixing two doses of Dilantin is dangerous.
Your doctor will be able to prescribe the correct prescription only if he is aware of your health condition. The doctor should know about your allergic reactions and also know if you are diabetic or have any ailment of the heart, liver and kidney or if you have any condition that causes bone thinning.
Pregnant women should not use the drug as it causes birth defects. The drug is also traced in breast milk and so a newborn should not be fed while a woman is on Dilantin medication.
When you are taking Dilantin drugs, you should never miss your doctor's appointment, as the drug is known to develop suicide thoughts. In case you come across any mood or behaviour change, immediately contact the physician.
