Drug Uses
Ortho Tri–Cyclen contains a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones, which is used for preventing pregnancy. It may also be used for regulation of the menstrual cycle, for treatment of symptoms of menopause, or treatment of other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Taken
Ortho Tri–Cyclen comes in tablets to take orally. Then take one pill a day, the time interval between pills should not be more than 24 hours. It is advised to take the pills at the same time every day (e.g. before bed, with a meal, or first thing in the morning). If you take your pills at night, this can reduce nausea or headache that you may experience while taking birth control pills. Avoid missing pills or starting the pack late. The more pills are missed the higher the risk to get pregnant. You may have spotting, light bleeding or you may feel sick to your stomach during the first 13 packs of pills. You should not stop taking pills if you feel sick. This side effect usually goes away. If it stays for long, you should consult your doctor. If you find it difficult remembering to take the pill at the right time, you should discuss with your doctor the use of another birth control method.

Warnings/Precautions
Smoking while using Ortho Tri–Cyclen increases your risk of a stroke, heart attack, blood clots, high blood pressure, or other diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Ortho Tri–Cyclen may be less effective if you have diarrhea or you are vomiting for any reason, or if you are taking antibiotics or anticonvulsants. If you are planning to have a surgery (that includes dental surgery), let your doctor know, that you are using Ortho Tri–Cyclen. You may develop vision problems if you are using contact lenses or you are nearsighted. Your contact lenses may also be not as effective. If those problems occur, contact your eye doctor. This drug may cause a patchy darkening of the skin on the face (melasma). Avoid long exposure to sunlight and sun lamps, as this may increase darkening of the skin. Consult your doctor about use of sunscreens and protective clothing. If you are using Ortho Tri–Cyclen you should not take any other medication without the consultation of your doctor. Do not use Ortho Tri–Cyclen if you are pregnant or likely to become pregnant. If you think you might be pregnant contact your doctor immediately. This drug passes into breast milk and can reduce lactation. It is not recommended to use Ortho Tri–Cyclen if you are breast feeding as it may harm the baby. Ortho Tri–Cyclen does not protect you from HIV (AIDS) or other sexually transmitted diseases.

Missed Dose
If you miss one pill, take the forgotten pill as soon as you remember. The next pill should be taken at a regular schedule–this might mean taking two pills in one day. It is advised to use a backup method of contraception for the next 7 days after a pill is missed. If you miss more than 1 dose of Ortho Tri–Cyclen, contact your doctor for further instructions.
